Introducing Figural Artists Virginia Beach!

I can't tell you how excited I am to share this news! Beginning June 5, 2017, the new group Figural Artists VB will meet every Monday evening, 6-9pm to develop our skills drawing and painting the human form. These sessions feature a live clothed model who will hold one pose for 3 hours, enabling artists of any skill level from beginner to pro to work at their own pace. (And don't worry, the model and artists all get breaks throughout the session!)

You can choose to focus on portraiture, study the proportions of the entire body, or focus on the way fabrics and clothing fold and wrinkle on the body. Artists are welcome to work in any medium, but you must bring everything you'll need, including an easel if necessary.

This new group was created to fill a specific need in our arts community. I have been a part of the Norfolk Drawing Group off and on for years, and I am so thankful to have such a well-run figure drawing group just minutes from home. The talent and artwork of our various local artists is out of this world, and the artists themselves are funny, friendly, encouraging, and inspirational. If you have no qualms about working with a nude model for 3 hours, then by all means, I wholeheartedly encourage you to go (ages 18+ only)!

However, because we do study the nude model, not everyone is old enough or comfortable enough to do so. My hope is that Figural Artists VB will entice the rest of our arts community to study the human form from life rather than photos, which can be limiting. There is also so much potential I see in my own teen students, and in our various schools, that I wanted to offer students from all over Hampton Roads a chance to study from life on a regular basis - a rare opportunity for high school students in most cities.

The first two Mondays of the month, we book the same model in the same pose, giving you 6 whole hours! The following two or three Mondays will feature a different model for 3 hours each. As the group grows, I hope to offer more period outfits, but for now we'll keep things simple. Check out the Facebook page for details and schedule.
